EME2040 Blog #1

Hi! My name is Annelise and I am a first year student at Florida State University. I am majoring in Elementary Education and I want to teach elementary schoolers after I graduate. I enjoy working out, traveling, going out to eat, and shopping. My favorite food is tacos and my favorite TV show is Big Brother.

I have worked with technology as long as I can remember. In elementary school I helped broadcast the school morning news show using a live streaming system. I am very capable of operating all Microsoft and Google platforms. Additionally, I use my phone and computer every day on various apps such as Snapchat, Instagram, and text message.

My personal learning networks (PLNs) I am most familiar with and use most often are Social Media apps such as Snapchat, Instagram, and Tiktok. On those apps, I can chat with my friends and create fun content. I am also well versed in messaging apps such as text and Groupme. Recently, Canvas because a PLN for me as I must access the website every day. Most PLNs I use are online and I am not extremely familiar with offline PLNs.

Copyright is a form of property or rights that an author has to create copies or their original work for publishing or resale. Fair use limits the rights of copyright material so one may use the material without contacting the original creator. As a teacher, it is extremely important to make sure you copyright original material you create or if you are using someone else's material that you make sure it is fair use. Students must be aware of the definitions of these terms so they don't copy or steal material that is not theirs.

Cyberbullying is a huge technology implementation issues. A possible solution to cyberbullying is to monitor what kids post on class forums or restricting hurtful and harmful words. Academic dishonesty is another big technology implementation issue. A way to avoid academic dishonesty is to send all submitted work through a plagiarism site such as Turnitin. Restricting group work is also a helpful way to avoid academic dishonesty.

I thoroughly enjoyed working on the Newsletter Assignment and pretending I had my own classroom. Some new skills I acquired were learning how to add a banner to my documents, creating word art, and decorating text boxes to make them shaded and outlined. I think to improve my newsletter, I could add more visual elements or interactive elements. The skills I learned were extremely useful for my future career aspirations as a teacher.

Blog Journal #2

Throughout my years in elementary, middle, and high school I used Microsoft programs weekly, if not daily. I have used Microsoft word to write essays, take notes, and create flyers. For me, I prefer Microsoft processing systems compared to Google processing systems. I believe Microsoft has more variety and a more user friendly layout compared to Google that is harder to navigate.

The standard that means the most to me is the collaborator standard that states, "Educators dedicate time to collaborate with both colleagues and students to improve practice, discover and share resources and ideas, and solve problems." This standard means that it is important to hear and share others' ideas between coworkers and students. It is extremely important for K-12 educators and students to collaborate because two heads are better than one. When a group shares ideas, often the problem can be solved quicker and more effectively.

I believe the term digital native is an appropriate term for today's youth as many kids have never experienced a world without technology. Being a digital native means you grew up with and are very familiar with a variety of different technologies. There are a lot of differences between digital natives and digital immigrants. For example, students can often fix technological issues for teachers or even know how to work a program better than the teacher. Sometimes it is frustrating when the teacher takes a while to get the technology to work or doesn't know how to operate it altogether. I am positive that when I am a teacher, there will be major improvements in technology and I will not be able to operate them perfectly. My students will probably be frustrated with me as well.
